Hawaiian earthquake history
#1
While we witness from a distance the devastation in Haiti from what is described as a 7.0 earthquake I thought I would bring forward Hawaiian history on the topic to remind us that similar events can occur here.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/s...php#hawaii

All earthquake dates are UTC, not local time.

* 1868 03 29 - Ka'u District, Island of Hawaii - M 7.0
* 1868 04 03 - Ka'u District, Island of Hawaii - M 7.9 Fatalities 77
* 1871 02 20 - Lanai, Hawaii - M 6.8
* 1929 10 06 - Holualoa, Hawaii - M 6.5
* 1938 01 23 - Maui, Hawaii - M 6.8
* 1951 08 21 - Kona, Hawaii - M 6.9
* 1973 04 26 - Island of Hawaii, Hawaii - M 6.2
* 1975 11 29 - Kalapana, Hawaii - M 7.2 Fatalities 2
* 1983 11 16 - Kaoiki, Hawaii - M 6.7

Assume the best and ask questions.

I remember the one on 8/13-14/2007. I closed escrow on August 9, 2007, and within the next several days the following all happened (or at least that's the way I remember it): Hurricane Flossie headed toward the island, the lava stopped going to Pu'u O'o and started heading toward Pahoa and there was an earthquake.

Note to tourists:
Plan your vacation for May, September, or December.

How was this list created? I thought there were a great many more earthquakes in Hawaii...
Is it a list of 4 or greater?

Thanks for sharing Rob. My mind naturally drifted to our new island home upon hearing of the tragedy in Haiti. Then again the city I currently call home straddles multiple fault lines and is overdue for a big one. Really no matter where you live there are risks... it's part of life.

Eight... I am positive Rob's list is only more significant quakes. ;-)

Blake, Yeah, I'm sure you're right. I hope to get out of here before the New Madrid goes.

Hence the reason for building codes and building with permits!

Thanks for the reminder Rob. My family has been through numerous earthquakes in CA in the last 200 years... and so it really does does not bother me to live in a place where that is likely. I am much more concerned about infrastructure than personal loss or danger. That could take a very long time to repair here.

Aloha au i Hawai`i,
devany
