Names of tree in front of HD in Hilo??
#1
Aloha - does anyone know the name/variety of trees that are in the parking lot of Home Depot in Hilo? (the ones closest to the building) I just love them, and I keep forgetting to ask when I go there. If they don't get much taller, one tree would fit perfect on our 1/4 acre lot.....

The one time I remembered to ask at the counter, the girl smiled and said "pretty green tree". Appreciate any info - thanks much!

I love that reply from the cashier...pretty green trees. If you are mentioning the smaller trees with pretty pink orchid like flowers they are the bauhinia purpurea or the common name orchid trees which are native to india and china.

Wow, you've really put a lot of work into your blog in the last month, keep up the good work, almost as good as being there - you rock!

They trees in question are planted in the parking aisles, towards the front of the building, I've never seen any flowers on them. And they are such "pretty green trees" [Smile] Gotta love the name!

Just passed by them today... bipinnate, compound leaves would put it most likely in the legume tree families ... being from the midwest, my first instinct is to narrow it to something in the locusts.... but I didn't look any closer...

For a 'pretty green tree' that is endemic to Hawaii, look to the Koa tree, which can look much like the 'pretty green trees' at HD with very small white poof flowers & smallish (for the family) beans

Mahalo for the info Carey and Noel, did some surfing, it does look like it could be a locust or a young Koa. Will have to find out who does the landscapting at HD next time I'm there, maybe I can pinpoint the variety.....I have a weakness for anything green and flowers, Puna is the place for me, a little slice of paradise!

The trees in question with the bipinnate leaves in the HD parking lot are both Rainbow Shower (Cassia hybrid of fistula x javanica x grandis) and Pink Shower (Cassia grandis).

You see the shower trees all along King Kamehameha in the fall, lining the avenue between downtown and Wailoa. The rainbow shower tree is a hybrid and the only one that doesn't produce the messy beans typical to acacia family trees. It is NOT a small tree.

Rainbow shower tree (Cassia x nealiae)
"The mature height of this hybrid is 30–40 ft, with a spread of up to 35 ft. Rainbow shower tree prefers full sun and grows moderately well in sandy to clayey soils. It is not
salt tolerant but is moderately wind and drought tolerant..." The roots are non-invasive.
