Purple(not) sweet potato(e)s
#1
My Hawaiian purple sweet potato's that my friend brought back cuttings from turned out white. Could it be because I planted them in Florida sand? The greens seemed to grow well. The tubers came out small and white. The only incident was one episode with worms that sevin took care of. But small white potato's.

Did it come from Home Depot here? They seem to have a variety they call a purple sweet potato but I think it is some kind of ornamental. It has small white flesh tubers and hard to get out of the garden once started.

Or it could be a variety of edible white sweet potato... but then the tubers would be big.

A Puerto Rican friend brought them back from a potato field he visited on the Big Island. He said they were purple.

Some of the fields here have more that one variety, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. I do know that some of the very accessible fields have perimeter plants that are put in as a decoy to avoid the field from being stripped.

ETA: was that friend a grad student working with FWS???

No an old traditional Puerto Rican man (mid 70s I think) who has a 3 acre lot that is absolutely full of different edibles. He has turkeys, chickens, squash (several types), sugar cane, corn, peas, pidgeon peas, lemon grass, sweet patatos, citrus, guava, mango, avacado, etc. His lot is amazing. He even has a church building that his wife is the leader of. He has my share of the green thumb alotment along with his own.

ps: He does have better soil than I do. His area is naturall better plus he has been building his soil for the past 25 years. My grass is lucky to get watered and I just have sand and clay.

They do have some purple streaks inside and are mildly sweet.

My MIL bought some in October at Hilo farmers market that match that description.
