As I warned you, I am heading your way in the 2nd week of October. I will be with you only briefly and part of my time will be spent touring subdivisions (what a way to spend a vacation). However, I am hoping to see some Puna while I am there, too, if you know what I mean and I think you do. I like live music, swimming and water, beautiful vistas, quirky yet high functioning people, MJ, good breakfasts and great coffee, friendly dogs, and fruity drinks and sunsets. I have never snorkeled, but I would like to try. I would like to be able to make peace with lava if possible but lava must understand that my subdivision, once I select it, has a right to exist. I believe that our "government" had no clue that we would be attacked on 9/11 even though they had a memo suggesting as much on their desk on August 6, 2001. I believe the philosophy of the current government is simply to destroy government, and leave matters to the free market. Witness: The Katrina aftermath. I believe it is within the power of Americans to either accept this state of affairs, or reject it. I reject it because I believe we are our brother's keeper and that the free market doesn't handle that very well. Witness, Katrina.
So, where should I go???!!! I'm thinking Champagne Pond, but you tell me.

Oh, Glen, I have so many places to show you, but in addition to what we see together (my job seems to be part Realtor, part tour guide), go to Volcanoes National Park, visit the Botanical Garden just above Hilo (and the beautiful scenic route its on). Visit Akaka Falls and Boiling Pots and all the parks along Kalanianaole Blvd in Hilo. Visit Wa'a Wa'a (well, actually we'll do that together).

Glen, you didn't specify what type of live music, here are 3 concerts from Oct. 7-14:
Oct 7, 7:30 UH-H auditorium. "Shout, Sister, Shout" gospel music tribute to Rosetta Tharpe w/ Odetta, the Holmes Bros. & Marie Knight; part of the UH - H consert series
Oct 7, 7:00 - 8, 2:00 Palace Theater. "Drum & Percussion Festival" traditional & non-traditional drum & percussion performance groups inc. Musasa Marimba Ensemble & a memorial tribute to steel drummer Chili Charles.
Oct. 11, 7:30 - "Jeffrey Swann - piano - part of the Hawaii Concert Society series
There are also live bands at many of the eateries & Hotels, and many other venues in Hilo & surrounds.

Welcome to Puna, Glen! I think you will be amazed by the mystique and beauty she has to offer and feel more at ease about the abundant wildlife that is Puna. I already told John we should be somewhat settled in our new spot in HSRE...c'mon down and take a look up close! Aloha Nui Loa!

Carey, Carrie, John -- I will definetely try to see everyone if I can. I am definetely going to HSRE (water! mail! ccr's! a POOL!, hens!).
Wow -- I amazed at the musical offerings. I am totally into Hapa (who I saw here in SoCal), Izzy, piano music, soul, Louisiana stuff. I guess what some call World Music --mostly non-commercial indigenous music, or classical. That's me.
I'm so excited to be coming to this mythical land!

Lava is really pretty interesting. If you go to the lighthouse at the tip by Kapoha you see where the lava in 1960 came right up to the base of the lighthouse and then split and went around it.
Near there, you can see a cinder mining operation. And there are old cinder cones around Leilani and Lanipuna.
On the red road along the coast there is a nice mixture of lavas, a'a and pahoehoe.
At Lava Tree Park you can see a bunch of interesting lava trees where lava came up out of cracks, surrounded trees and then drained away leaving casts of the trees.
And at Volcano park you can see all kinds of nice lava including hot lava.
Be sure and stop by the steam vents at Volcano. When we were there it was so chilly that standing in the steam felt really good.
