I'm including the url of the folks who built my yurt. I know David was doing yurts on HI at one point and I think he still does. The actual yurt-raising of my yurt is included in the "Under Construction" page of the Gallery. It's the first jpg. David Raitt, who owns California Yurts, is a great guy and the brother of Bonnie Raitt.

I am an absolute yurt lover ever since I saw my first one. They are an incredible space. I prefer a series of small yurts which are connected by lanais or walkways rather than one big huge one for permanent housing. Maybe one larger communal/kitchen yurt with smaller satellite yurt bedrooms.

I also have a tipi which is a less expensive, but also amazing temporary housing solution that is a lot less expensive than a canvas yurt. Great spaces!

I wanted to add that Mother Earth News has a lot of information on alternative building, solar, etc. My attention was captured by a cottage they write about that can be built for $4000. It is under 'books and things for living wisely.' A book about building without a mortgage.

yes, punagirl, I 'own' a couple of lots with a friend. I sent him to BI to find me an acre or more and he bought lots instead. I'm a little leery about living in a subdivision since I've been used to a lot more space and I also wanted to be able to grow a lot of food. I have another friend from Maui who is looking at larger pieces of land who may want a land partner, but I'm not certain how that will go--especially now that prices are much higher.

Looking at the listing you posted...so, HI will accept canvas yurts as dwellings on a permanent basis?

Not sure if on a permanent basis. Those yurts have been there about 5 years. Seems if they were illegal it would have to be mentioned in the listing. I would think some of the yurt compainies would know. You could call the county office too. As for your lots, you will find Puna subdivisions, espically the ones with bigger lots are really different from mainland subdivisions. Even 1 acre lots are in subdivisions.

hi april,

certain subdivisions have active ccr's that mandate what you can and cannot build like leilani. i think most of the yurt lifestyles tend to be set up in the 3 acre parcels and are hidden or have been there for awhile and have been grandfathered in. makes sense to check with county and your subd association to see if this is allowed.
