Aloha, this is Craig from Element's Hair Design in the Mnt.view village.
I have some ideas I would like to bounce around and get some input on a few of these ideas. And possible zoning issues.
First I would like to throw a block party/fashion show from local designers, including accessories of course. Maybe Crazy hats I want FUN I want everyone to have a blast and promote business.
Looking for Budding caterers to show case, maybe live entertainment,D.J music
Maybe great creations from the Mnt.View bakery?
maybe some two for one video rentals who knows.
Oh and that wonderful bread women in Fern Acres that sells bread?
or people with extra flowers?
people who make wonderful art.
I am really trying to make a win win situation I KNOW the Economy Sucks BIG TIME!
But we are on a quite street right off highway 11.
between Volcano and Pahoa this could be a fun event and a great way to build and coordinate local clients and it would only cost your time. Just trying to figure something new and entertaining and make it a win win situation. So feel free to give me some input.

This might not be too pertinent to your particular project but you reminded me of some Mt. View history. Today is actually the first time I drove through Mt. View town in years, despite the fact that I drive past it almost everyday. I saw the theater remains, only a slab now and the feed store where my shop used to be. In the late 70's a friend and I opened a home brew shop called Tropical Fermentations. We sold home brewing supplies and we were also total beer snobs. We only sold imported and good American microbrews. Believe it or not we actually had a real business for 4 years. In Mt. View! Whould’a thought.
One weekend the town had a fundraiser. Dexter Cate, local Hilo resident, had been arrested in Japan for swimming into a bay at night and opening a fence which freed thousands of porpoises that had been destined for slaughter. He was a Big Island hero and the community was on the move to mount a defense fund to get him out of jail. His bother organized a town party in Mt. View that ended up taking over the town between theater and our store. All of our profits and the theater’s receipts were donated to the fund. That was one of the biggest and best parties ever and a lot of money was raised. Fortunately the police and liquor department inspectors were absent that day as I believe that there were some violations occurring.
It was the biggest thing that had happened to the town in years. The only thing that might have come close to that event was when the theater screened “In the Realm of the Senses”. It was and art flick but because it was rated X the theater was flooded with locals. It was a bizarre flick that probably frightened more than it titillated but what a hit! Sold out performances every night.
Mt. View town may be a sleepy little side road but on occasion it has been the mouse that roared.. Let’s see a Mt. View Mardi Gras. You never know.

Mardi gras is fun, but 10 days is tight... Fat Tuesday is Feb. 16th....
Prince J. Kuhio Kalanianaole day (March 26th) would give you a some more time to plan. This day is more commonly referred to as “Kuhio Day.” Prince Kuhio Day is celebrated by a parade on the island of Oahu and with statewide canoe races and luaus, maybe dryland cardboard canoe races in Mt. View???

I agree mardi gra would be great but it is such short notice, and I really am asking for people to help put this together. So maybe I should be asking if anyone would. Like to be apart of this, I have organized events in the past, but I always had a large pool of people I knew that would help, I am just trying to kill two birds with one stone, so those of you with great contacts could help alot.
Does anyone know if I would need a permit to do a block party?
In most states you do, also wondering if you can give away adult beverages if you don't charge such as wine and beer tasting then the state uasully can't do much about it.
keep the ideas coming I think I might be on a roll.

There's your idea! Huli huli chicken, a guy with a ukuelele (sorry I can't be there), ten people doing the hula (contact a hulau or the HPP ladies and see if they are up for it) and you are done. I would still add beads, so you can gay it up a little bit. Easily available online and cheap (I might have some I can send, too).

Nice story Peter.
Craig, maybe a( Block Party ) sign out in front of Vernas to get everyone riled up ? Put a contact number down in big numbers so to read while driving by.
I think I would call it a Vog party.
Use that little wedge space right there for the stage ?
Campy movies on the side of one of the stores ?
Collect canned food and toys for charity too.
