Aloha Looks like I'll be here til New Years at least. I was hoping to get there for Cheap Tricks New Years party.Nextyear.I can't find any marinas there so it looks like I'll have to get used to sleeping in a nonrocking bed again.Maybe the earthquakes will help.I am bringing all my Jimmy Buffet cds and Bob Marley and lots more.No music stores? How about jam sessions or musical parties? I'm a bass player and am learning the mandolin. If the shop doesn't sell I'll ship my tools and start building window awnings and patio [is that the same as a lanai?]covers.I read someone has a yurt they live in,you can make one pretty comfy if its made right.I knew a science teacher living in one south of Eugene Ore withhis wife and three kids.Self sufficiant hydro electric on a stream, running spring water, solar and wood heat, pretty nice.Maybe temp house for a while.I will get another sailboat to cruise around the islands.I'm alreadygetting rid of stuff. its amazing how much stuff you collect when you dont move for a few years. Is there anything I cant replace when I get there that I should ship? Tools?fishing gear?I'll be looking for a used Harley or pickup first thing then place to stay.I really enjoy reading the forums and have learned alot.Cant wait to meet all you Punatics and becoming one myself. So many interesting people. Those who sleep close to water find tranquillity [old Hawaiian saying] Aloha to all Punatics

Hey Cocoa Moe,
didnt want your thread to slip away with out at least saying aloha.
Don't know the answers to your questions myself.
I will say that I see used Harley's and the like in the paper fairly often so you shouldn't have too much trouble.
What to bring and sell is a tough one really. If it is trade related you may need it if it isn't a fairly common item.
Sounds like a good life you got sailing and looking for marinas to moor in.

Aloha CocoaMoe,

I lived aboard my 35' Piver Trimaran for a few years in the 80's and sailed all over Hawaii, lived in Kaneohe Bay, Ala Wai Yacht Harbor, Keehi Lagoon, Lahaina, Hanalei Bay (can only anchor in winter because bay gets walled off with waves like Honolua).

Are you in Hawaii or about to arrive soon? You know the channels between the islands are some of the roughest sailing in the world. I had to deliver a Nautor Swan 44 (long story) from Lahaina to Honolulu within 24 hours no matter what, through a Kona storm which almost killed me. Literally 50 foot seas, 65 mph winds, heavy down pours, lightning, very, very scary sailing, sat nav went out, autopilot wouldn't work in such heavy seas, etc. I had to pull down the jib by myself with waves crashing over me! Just me and one friend who got seasick and he had to stay below the whole time hurling. Hawaii is the most incredible place to sail, but it is definately a roller coaster!

If you're looking for a decent marina on the Big Island, Honokohau Marina is the best near Kona. Especially if you need to put it on the hard (dry dock).

As far as the Hilo area is concerned, there's Reeds Bay, located between Radio Bay Boat Harbor and the Wailoa Sampan Basin in Hilo Bay which has 24 moorings and Radio Bay located East of Reeds Bay has 12 moorings. They don't want people living aboard though.

The best marina in all of Hawaii, especially if you want to live aboard, is the newer private Ko'olina Marina on Oahu although rates start at $339 per month for 30'.

Most of Hawaii's marinas are possibly the worst in the US, very run down, neglected and many of the bathrooms often have tweakers hanging around at night so security can also be an issue if you're at a dock.

Here's some of the mooring fees in Hawaii:

Here's more info on the state's site:

Aloha and happy sailing!
