Telecom and other deliveries
#1
I don't know the local tradition.
I live in the nice neighborhood and don't lock my gate.
Yesterday I found Hawaiian Telecom phone books delivery which I didn't ask for (I am not the customer) by my door.
To get it there one has to open the gate, walk almost at the end of the lot and go up the stairs more than 5 feet.
If this is a standard procedure,I guess I will have to put the lock on the gate.I don't know if that was the case but a delivery person had a chance to look inside the room.
So does it often happen - those unsolicited "deliveries"?
How far do they go on someones's property?
Usually ,like with newspapers, the job doesn't pay that much to take extra time to go inside a property.

They probably just threw it. I saw them doing just that around Nanawale.

That might require some Olympic champ skills .5 feet fence and the books didn't fell out during quite a long flight?
But I guess it's possible since I have a big dog and so far he has been very protective of "his" yard. The only way they might have walked in if he was at the back, doing his "business" and they had some time to run real fast[Smile].
My neighbors who usually at home most of the time were out too.

Trite advice as I don't have the answers that you are seeking about how far someone can go onto your property, I only commiserate with your feeling. But don't sweat the small stuff as you can't control this - yes, someone can wander onto your property and you can't be at all places at all times and prevent the random or (worse) determined access which a hop over a locked gate can also accomplish. Probably someone on minumum wage or, worse, piece rate for a needed, specific delivery to the front door. There are risks all around us that are out of our control. Stillhope: I can imagine the feeling of "wait a minute, I didn't ask for your unsolicited phone book, I'm not a subscriber, what gives?" And the delivery person that is possibly thinking, "uh oh, big dog, please let me get in/out in one piece, I have no health insurance!" I'm wondering if you can get your address off the 'mailing list' as unwanted and unnnecessary? I am very sympathetic to that uneasy feeling you had that someone had come so far into your personal space uninvited.

In HPP I've seen them leave the phone books out on the street, which is a good indication of which houses are unoccupied.

I helped someone with their Hawaiian Telcom route. Instructions and a list of all the houses of Hawaiian Tel customers are given to each delivery person. Books are to be "placed" not "thrown". Only company customers get the books. The books are to go on the porch if the house is on a regular sized city lot. If a dog is present note it on the list and leave the books at beginning of the sidewalk or driveway. If a gate is present, open or closed, do not go past it. Leave books at gate on the latch side. If a listed house looks vacant note the fact and do not leave books. If the house is posted "no trespassing" or "Private Property" leave the books at the beginning of the driveway or sidewalk. I will say that most folks we were able to chat briefly with, were pleased to get their new books. Some said they hardly used them because it is much easier to look numbers up on the net.
Not much pay for a lot of work. We delivered about 600 books and received about $200. Would not do it again.

Thank you,Kaptkimo.
That's exactly what I thought - "if the gate is present"..
Actually a couple of neighbors I talked to who have gates said the books were in the middle of driveway, not by the doors.
You are right, not much pay for the hard work.
Did they pay you for the gas? How much the trip cost you if it's OK to ask?

The post office had "too big for the box" cards in all the PO boxes. All PO box owners got one, not just customers.
