18 year old running for Puna house seat
#1
Solomon Singer is running for Helene Hale's House seat. His web site seems to be saying that his best attribute for the job is being good with animals. I'm a big fan of youth activism, but I didn't see anything on his website to make me think of him as qualified to represent us in Honolulu. I think the good old boys would eat him alive and Puna would continue to get nada.

If the last name seems familiar it's because he is the home schooled son of Syd Singer. The campaign website is www.VoteForSinger.com

Sounds pretty darn good to me for an 18 year old. While I wouldn't just up and vote for him, it is nice to see a young person do something positive. Maybe you shouldn't be so negative.

I don't see anything on his webpage where he distances himself from his loopy parents, not even in a subtle manner.
For someone home-schooled by Sydney Ross Singer, that's an important miss.

Good luck to him, but he won't get my vote.

I still don't see anything there that qualifies him to be able to protect or advance Puna's interests in Honolulu. The desire for public service is laudable at any age, but we need a Rep that can work effectively for Puna in a Byzantine good old boys system, where who you know is often the most important tool for getting what your district needs.

I know equine hoof care too, but that and a pilots license don't make a person qualified to be a legislator in my opinion. Licenses are not life or professional experience, they're just proof you could pass a test. I work with some pretty amazing 18 year olds on a daily basis, including ones who have been organizing and participating in NGO's and conferences from a local to a global level, and I haven't seen one yet who I would want representing Puna in the legislature at this age.

I don't think I'm being negative, just realistic. I posted the link so people could check it out for themselves and draw their own conclusions.

I say give the fellow a chance. Look at what he has already accomplished. Let's not look at the age, but as a new stronger voice/physical stamina he will have against these current lazy, selfish politicians in office now. They do not have a clue! That in itself is worth putting him in office against these "Good Ole Boy's & Girls" who have done little to better our community, and only offer us lip service.

I thought being a bit loopy was a prerequisite for living in Puna - that's why we moved here Smile

In all seriousness, isn't there a way we can discuss this young man's qualification or lack of qualification without making a personal attack on his parents?

His cousin is an imposter!**S**

I'm sure we understand your point PaulW and not knowing anything about it, it's well taken, but KeeauRich is right, imho.

Unless his family member/mentor was Anwar Awlaki, that is. Wink

Just kidding. You go kid! Glad to see you in the race.

I met Solomon at SPACE a couple of weeks ago and he seemed like a very intelligent, driven young man. He had the air of a politician and stayed on message during our conversation. I'm not sure I would rather vote for someone with "connections" in the Good Old Boys network. Solomon seemed like a very fresh new voice. And as for requiring him to publicly disown his father, I think that's a bit much. I know some of you have strong feelings about his father, but I'm willing to give Solomon the benefit of the doubt. I would hope he can be his own man. We are taught to respect our mother and father, right? Would you trash your father just to win an election?
