Rock-n-Roll in Paradise
#1
I am visiting Southern California for another week or so..... and catching up with the many friends I left behind. Some of those friends are Rock-n-Rollers from yesteryear and have begun asking me when we are putting together a Rock Festival on the big island. (I admit a did a little promoting for bands while in So Cal the last 10 years). So how about it? Is anyone interested in putting together either a WEEKEND OF FUN AND MUSIC in Hilo and maybe in Kona too? Or maybe just a couple bands at the Ashram in Hilo or some such concert? Most of my contacts do Rock from the 60's and 70's with some awesome blues thrown in, but there are also people doing Jimmy Buffett stuff, Country Western and even some of the newer pieces rearranged for us over 30 types. If we could put together a festival OR if there is a summer festival for 2006 looking for talent I would like to know who to contact. I could then work on booking the bands into some of the Kona resorts to make the transport over here cost effective. In recent conversations my friends don't expect to make much of any money in the venture but do expect to have expenses covered.

So, what does anyone think? Is this doable? I don't know the entertainment climate in Hilo well enough in Hilo to tell them what I might be able to do. Who has ideas?

It sounds like something I could have fun at. It is a great idea but I am not sure if they would make enough to cover expenses. I think a lot of acts skip Hawaii altogether for this reason. This could be a chance to start a yearly festival and if prompoted island wide and even on West Coast might could draw a big crowd. Any former big names in the crowd? You would need a couple to get people to fly from other islands. There are some "rock stars" in Hawaii too. Taj Mahal (I think it was Maui) lives on here as does Jessie Colin Young (Kona).

I know Punafish and his sister Pam really like blues stuff. Maybe they would help out? They've got some unrented space! laff, laff. Who knows maybe Pam would be into hosting a bunch of rockers for a weekend! Maybe even promote their rental in the process.

I hope they won't hate me for suggesting this.

If i have time, i can help out with the sound system. I've even got some equipment.

Sounds like Hazen and little sis have struck up a friendship...who else but a good friend would volunteer your house for a rock concert? LOL. How does the spanish go - Mi casa es su casa? Just hope pslamont's friends have all outgrown the hotel-trashing phase that my old rock idols sang about in the 70s. (It sounds so cool when you're in your teens and guitars are smashing into the walls of someone ELSE's property Smile

Seriously, Pamela and I both love rock and blues. We'd be happy to contribute whatever way we can. The problem I have is that our property is available only if I'm NOT staying there when they come Sad - a real bummer for me: if we contribute I won't be there to enjoy the music!

Once/if(?) pslamont nails down a date we can talk details.
For now, I'm delegating the delicate task to Hazen of convincing little sis to shack up with a bunch of musicians chilling in paradise. Good luck, my friend! SmileSmileSmile

One more thing. If we're going to make this happen, I'd feel so much better if we could make it a charity thing to help out the local folks. Whaddaya think?
Aloha!

Tim, I LIKE the charity idea. I have done tons of charity events in So Cal. We need to find the RIGHT cause. It MUST be local; that is one of my personal criteria. I prefer it not be a huge organization; our contribution should make an impact and that is best on a small cause. I have supported (in the past thru my organization KokoNutz) a battered women's shelter, a men's homeless shelter, an immigrant Somali family, etc.... it's great. What a wonderful idea!
We need to learn about local ordinances, the powers that be, etc...

I have 30 acres so location is no problem; we will need to build a stage I suppose.

Tons of things to consider. Let's everyone put out heads together and think... and by the way, my musician friends are WAY past the destructive stage. Most have homes and families of their own and have learned to respect property, people and life in general. Growing up ain't so bad!!!

Startin' to sound like a mini BI Woodstock. It'd be a fun project to give something back to the island, make some friends and have fun. Can't wait to hear others' ideas on how to make it happen. If it's charity we might even be able to get some local business's to sponsor...on second thought, that would take the simplicity out of it, wouldn't it? Just a crazy idea. Feel free to shoot it down...

Also, got lots of talented musician friends in Japan who might be interested in participating, but it would all come down to timing.

Let the brainstorming begin!

Aloha.

Mee too. I can help although I have no musical talent I love the Mo-Town and love that funky music, even the Beatles and Miles too! This past June with a group of other women we had a convention in Sacramento for 1700, we raise money for women's education. I can work from the mainland, corresponding, word processing, tickets, mailings, (I'm good with flowers and raffel baskets too) design a shirt for the event, what ever. If it is in 2006 perhaps we will be on island! If not we will certainly have time to plan travel over for this event. I'm with Tim Charity event for the Island. Oh wonderful.

ALOHA PUNA PEOPLE.a charity concert sounds like music to my ears. one thing that comes to mind is the evil thing called "ICE".starts with an addiction that leads to crime and usally ends in haterd, abuse and broken familys.ice has a strong grip on the place that i love PUNA.it effects all walks of life on all islands, not just the addict.i know some people in the music seen and i would love to help out in any way.keeping it simple and real is what puna is all about.keep up the the good work my friends.SEAN

Definitely an exciting idea . I just selfishly hope it happens when I'm on island.
My 2 cents on the Charity aspect. Could we possibly steer away from the generic, something on the PC list and possibly chose something near and dear, important to the local BI population? Something that would ignite community support? Perhaps something the mainland musicians have never supported before? I don't now what it would be, but I'm sure there is something out there.
Ideas?

After school programs for kids are so important. I know that many parents work long hours to provide for their families. Perhaps get some of the "many" retired folks and active seniors involved. Bring in some community leaders to talk to the kids, some groups to further the preserving of hawaiian culture. Give the kids positves to fill the time till parents get home. This might be too big of a project, but maybe start it in some way?
