I was wondering where people like to go for Chinese? My favorite dish is Shrimp Chow Fun, followed by Kung Pao shrimp or chicken, and my husband likes spicy tofu dishes, but we haven't really found a good place here. Any suggestions?

There is not a single good Chinese restaurant on this island according to my wife who is Taiwanese. There are good Chinese restaurants in Honolulu, or even further to the East

definitely agree with john. i've never had such a terrible won ton mein as i experienced at leung's down on kanoelehua. the one at puainako makes an okay roasted chicken. but, anyone can do that. and, panda express is way too salty. carol, if you have time, try making those dishes yourself. they're not difficult.

I thought Don's in Kona & Jade Palace in Waimea are better than anything Hilo side. Also, had great Chinese somewhere around Capt Cook area, Makai side of highway, can't remember the name. Maybe John knows, or even if it's still there. Good luck in your search, meanwhile, I'm going to have all the Chinese & Greek food I can handle while in the Bay area soon!! [:p]

There is yet ANOTHER Chinese BBQ place opening up in the Malama Shopping center at the opposite end of the building that Subway's in. What was the name of that old business? Outpost?? It was an internet cafe that closed up last year.

In Malama, it will be another one of those No.1 Chinese BBQ places. Same as the one that opened recently in Hilo. Has anyone been to the one in Hilo?

The one in Captain Cook has changed hands several times, it's called Chinese BBQ now. I always went to Don's Chinese Kitchen and Royal Jade Garden before I met my wife and I thought they were pretty decent places until I visited China and Taiwan numerous times. After that I had to agree with my wife, these restaurants are not very good. My MIL taught me how to make some Chinese dishes and we brought back a suitcase of Chinese herbs and flavorings, but I can't even come close to the dishes being served there.

Mauka, love to get some recipes for the dishes in your last sentence. Combining two of today's threads, I make a killer tofu enchilada dish that guests rave over, so I can trade one if you like. Aloha!
