Pahoa Village cafe has free wi-fi if your friend has a laptop, otherwise the library has free computers and internet.

Doesn't Borders in Hilo (also at UHH there are hotspots, esp near the Library & Lava Rock...)
The youth hostels in Hilo have pay per use (I am think the public libraries may too...but...)

I am pretty sure Starbucks offers it as well.

In Hilo, there is pay-for-internet at a couple of places downtown (some even have computer stations you can use) including the starbucks which also has power plug ins. McDonalds has free internet but no place to plug in for power. I believe Surf Break cafe also advertises free internet (saw the sign when I was there but didn't use it)

We're doing fine Carrie. Thanks for asking. We are in California now and are getting ready to do a road trip from west coast to east coast.
