Pahoa Bypass speed change
#1
Anyone know about this? Apparently it is changing Monday. Unless there is some construction, I can't imagine why. It already 45 before Kahakai in both directions. Given that people generally go 5, 10, 20 MPH under the speed limit for the most part already between Pahoa and Leilani, if anything they should be increasing the speed limit.

The speed limit on the Pahoa by-pass is lowering to 45 mph. This is largely to accommodate the placement of a crosswalk at Post Office Rd. There is a charter school, HAAS, at that intersection with about 300 students. So a crosswalk is needed and a lowering of the speed limit.

I think this is a good thing. It just took three years of asking for it to get it started. There have been some fatalities on that stretch as well.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I hope that people obey this - it's a scary spot - and if kid's are gonna cross at that point we need for 'em to be safe.

I think it's a great idea.

A better solution, in addition to the speed limit change, is the blinking light that is set off when a pedestrian is going to cross like near FHB and HELCO in town.

But honestly - I had no idea what the change to be was until I read it here. The PD's sign might have added - speed limit change to 45 mph on June 28th.

Certainly makes sense if there is a crosswalk then. But if there is going to be a crosswalk then indeed there should be something else to alert that it is in use. Otherwise it's going to disappear in reality to most drivers. I've never actually seen anyone trying to cross that intersection on foot that I can recall. I've certainly had drivers pull out from it though recklessly, so maybe that will help with that too.

The state Transportation guys said at last month's meeting in Keaau that they were just awaiting one signature to implement a speed limit change from Kapoho to Keaau, of no more than 45 MPH. Don't know if this is part of that or not.

I am glad - better for the cruise control. That's what I do - set it for 45 all the way.Otherwise it's pretty irritating :45-55-45 every other mile.

I'm assuming there would still be zones of lower MPH...I don't think they'll be upgrading the 35 MPH areas. And Kapoho-Pahoa Road is 35 mp at least from Lava Tree State Park, I believe.

Alex,

I hope you only do this when you are the only one on the road.

Oblivious folk on cruise control are pretty irritating too.
