What happened to the Republican Party?
#1
I'm not trying to start anything controversial, but just wanted a place to raise an issue. I'm a registered Independent, but I lean to the right in my political sensibilities. I like being an Independent because I don't have to look over my shoulder if I want to vote for the best qualified person on the ballot; whether they're Democrat, Republican, or whatever.

That said, I have to wonder what has happened to the Republican Party recently? I'm talking about the over-zealous rhetoric coming from the far right (Tea Party, for instance) that's captivating and overwhelming any message from the political moderates. I hope I'm not alone in my recoil at the xenophobic enthusiasm emerging from Arizona that's being picked up by other states. The rhetoric coming from the Republican National Committee speaks of threats to freedom, mom, and apple pie. How can the press give this kind of dribble air time?

I also have to wonder if the Democratic Party doesn't see this over-the-top zealotry as self-defeating by the Republicans, so is content just to sit back and let it happen and collect votes from the debris.

Maybe the question should be: Is the press being truthful and objective in the air time it's giving the issue?

I have to remind you that Punaweb is for the discussion of Hawaiian and Puna issues. So exploration of national issues can and should be posed elsewhere. So this is not the place
