Kiluea Activity / Hiking
#1
I'm going to be on the BI in a week or so....Does anyone know how long the hike out to the lava flow is lately ? I want to go see it, but don't want a 2 plus hour hike each way.

Tikiyaki:
I did the hike in late October, and it took my wife and I about 1:20 each way and was well worth the hike. For the most part it was a simple hike, but we did it early in the morning so we could see where we were walking. Some hike in at dusk, but I didn’t want to hike out in the dark, although many do.
I should add that we hiked in from the Puna side at the end of the Kalapana road, and were no where close to the National park. At the time, we were told that you couldn’t get close to the flow from the chain of craters road in the park, so we did OUR way.
Hope this helps.

We were out the Kalapana side last night. About 45 min walk now - but I could only see small breakouts from parkign area for a few seconds (lots of rain so maybe cooling faster?). Plenty of people going out from this side.

And we heard one lone coqui out on the lava field! Couldn't believe it!!!!
