am looking forward to growing bananas and other tropicals, but also would like information about basic garden veggies. like tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, corn, etc.

I would say that to grow veggies successfully you will need to invest in a greenhouse/screen house. Only with a structure that could control the water (rain) and bugs was I able to have essentially trouble free growing of produce.... and I was able to grow more than I could eat.

I have no idea what the cheapest/smallest might be. I got mine from Greenhouse Specialists in Keaau.

I used the frame from one of those portable carports from Costco, covered the roof with poly film from Greenhouse specialist, and covered the sides with screen from them also, put in 2 4'x16'x6" raised beds. Total cost for everything including the frame app. $700. Had it up for over a year, getting continuous tomatoes, chives cucumbers and peppers.

I grow corn, vining squash, green beans, mustard greens, collards, bok choi, wong bok, lima beans, eggplant, peppers, and some herbs outdoors in the ground. We live in Central HPP at about 275' elevation. We are in the final phases of finishing a small greenhouse to grow tomatoes, lettuce, and some cucumbers.

do cucumbers and some of the other vegetables just keep producing or do you eventually have to start new plants? here in wyoming we only have four, five months at the most so plants never have time to produce very long.

I have had pepper plants, bell and yellow, last 18 months, other than that I haven't noticed.

Rob did squash or zuchini do better in the green house, it didn't seem to help with mine?

I have a tomato plant that is coming up on 18 months old that is still producing tomato's at a rate we can't use up. Juliet Hybrid from Gurneys. Home depot carries the seeds here. Cucumbers do seem to die off after producing for about 3 months.

Why do you need a greenhouse to grow veggies? Is the problem too much sun or too much water?
