Betel Nuts
#1
I am planning to purchase 3 or 6 acres in Hawaiian Acres to plant Betel Nut trees.

Does anyone know if the soil is suitable to planting/growing Betel Nut trees?

Any recommendations?

Thanks, - Archie

Hawaiian Acres has had some geologically recent lava flows, so there isn't a lot of soil in most of it unless someone has had it hauled in. You might want to look into what sort of soil betel nut trees like because you can usually get cinder soil mixed more or less to order to fit your needs. Of course, you might luck out and find a piece of land for sale that already has had soil put in that would be suitable. Not far away on the other side of Volcano Highway there are areas with deep natural soil.

What kind of soil is beneath the lava? I am thinking of ripping the land. Is the soil beneath the lava good for planting?

Hey Archie, have you thought about getting one with the trees started. I saw this in my own property search. http://www.alohaliving.com/RealEstate/Pr...ria&page=1

Ripping will only go down about 2 feet or so. Lava may go deeper!

Most soils that have had lava flow intrusions are thin layer deposits, and the heat of the lava normally kills the soil biota. You can see strata of fused soil/mineral layers in some of the road cuts & such.

Okay call me uninformed but there is a betel nut market here?

We have at least one betel nut tree we just found on our property so it is just interesting to me, not planting any big crop of them.

Edited to note: Duh! Betel nut is areca palm nuts!

Actually there is a betel nut market but I don't know how large. I had a Palauan woman working here for a while and she opened my eyes. She and most everyone she knew bought betel nuts and the lime and put them in their cheek. It gives a tingling sensation and a "slight buzz" so they told me. They all bought them at the farmers market so someone is selling....
