I went to one of the first organizing meetings for the PCDP. There was a certain amount of discussion about why this time it would be different and the County would take community input seriously. You were not wasting your time and this time the plan would be respected. I had my doubts.
Tonight I went to the meeting (but only for the first hour) in Kea’au and all I can say is my suspicions were correct. It was a truly interesting and sad experience.
After tonight I would say the Puna plan is dead.
Shipman organized at least 50 people who wore t-shirts saying “you passed it then, lets amend it now.” Most of the testimony was in favor of 194. But people did not really discuss 194, they talked about how bad and unrepresentative the PCDP is.
Even on a local level the government is not our government, business and politics as usual until some real change happens (and I am not talking tea party.)
