Big Island Weekly on Fred Blas and Brittany Smart
#1
The current issue of the Big Island Weekly features Alan McNarie's interviews with District 5 front runner Fred Blas and District 6 front runner Brittany Smart.

It's a good read. Click the link below.

From the article:

"He's a bit cagey, sometimes, about his stands on specific issues. When asked if he supported amendments to the Puna Community development plan, for instance, he said, "Yes, I do." Asked which amendments he supported, however, he said, "I will, when I get elected, let people know.""

WOW! Sounds like the old retort, "That's for me to know and you to find out!"

From the article: "Blas says he's no longer a Republican."

Good to see this confirmed.

If Smart wins, the progressives will have a majority, so Blas won't be able to do much harm, at least.

If Fred wants to do things for Puna he will have to work with the majority. Emily worked with the Hilo majority but frankly failed to get much done for Puna.

She was the swing vote on the rerereorg which wasted six months. The current council majority has accomplished very little except diverting the 2% land fund, approving the sale of Hamakua lands and giving Billy a blank check on the budget (raising tax rates). Geeze Louise. What will Emily get done being on the minority? Start baking biscuits and pies for Brenda, Dominic, Angel, Brittany and Pete to be nice?

We gotta get real.

Also, if Fred does what I think he will do and votes with the non-Hilo majority, he could be the very important sixth vote to override a Billy Kenoi veto. Does anybody honestly think that Emily will vote to override her cousin Billy? Yes, we need to get real.

Never thought of the veto proof majority. Yes, it would be good if Blas replaced Emily. But also, please correct me if I am wrong, but according to the BIW article, if Smart wins and provides a 5th progressive vote, chances are good that J Yoshimoto will have to yield the chair, perhaps to Yagong?

Our prayers will be answered....
