There's an interesting and well written letter to the editor in the Trib today wishing Plastic Bag a farewell. It is a good read whether you agree or not. By Kendal Tidwell of Pahoa.
The opening paragraph...
"Dear Plastic Bag: We've had a lot of good times together. You brought my groceries home for me cleanly and safely, you could be reused as a small trash bag in my kitchen or bathroom, and I could drop you off for recycling outside many stores. But I'm sorry to say that I've found someone better. His name is Cloth Bag, and he's amazing."

Some may be in favor of cloth bags, but when plastic bags have been banned, most people just switch to paper. The environmental effect will be huge.Have you ever seen a paper mill? How about an area that has been clear cut for pulp wood?
The other day I was walking along the shore just north of the Waiopai tidepools and noticed hundreds of pounds of plastic trash.Guess what, I didn't see one plastic bag. Most of the trash was fishing debris.Nets, line, and floats make up most of the debris but also many plastic water bottles and dozens of slippahs.
Maybe we are banning the wrong plastic.
What do you stick the fresh Ahi in that you buy along the road ? What about the Huli Huli chicken.Cloth bag is going to be kind of messy.
Some interesting reading here.

Hey, not to worry. I believe our fearless legislature is trying to enact a "sack tax" no matter what kind of bag you get.
Letter was cute though.

I read that on the mainland in some locations that instead of a ban they are putting a 25 cents per bag price/tax. Wonder how that would affect people's love for cheap throwaway plastic bags..... making them expensive throwaway plastic bags

I don't really get it. I re-use plastic grocery bags often and what goes in the rubbish is so small it is negligible. Is there something that I am not getting?

I think what you are not getting is that it is a small minority of people who are conscientious about how they handle trash. That and about 20%+ of our total waste stream (as I recall) is plastic film.... not a small number. Thousands of tons.
Personally I can think of bigger and better ways to change the rate at which we ruin a planet... but in forty years in business I haven't seen much happen yet. This is a small start.

i think it is just consciousness. bring a tupperware or pyrex or foil and plastic freezer bag to hold roadside items in. not, NOT, saying they are better but at least it is a step in the right direction. anyone who disagrees, and DOES NOT make an effort should visit the local transfer station and check it out. and plastic island in the ocean. we are our own world polluters. now, i know we are a long way from what was how it used to be, (no fast food, no plastic, less population, no money....) but we gotta make some effort. re using plastic bags is great. i do it all the time. but paper is not the real solution. cloth is, glass is, none is. i dont know....
