Bare Root Trees
#1
I purchased and planted eight bare root trees today. Two each of pear, apricot, peach and some other "combo fruit" who's name I can't remember. I wanted several types of apple and some plums but just learned that one has to order them in June for release in February. So, I will be planting again next year. It will be fun to watch these the first couple of years and see what they do.

Everything else I have being even a little productive is citrus and figs.

Just call me farmer-pam....

What elevation are you at?

Stone fruits need hundreds of "chill hours" to produce fruit, especially apricots. There are some low chill varieties that need less cold, but they all need some chill during the winter.

Chill Hours are hours where temperatures fall below 45 F but stay above 32 F.

Pam...nice to meet you in person! I have an acquaintance that lives at 200' and got close to 50 apples off her Anna Apple.

Andy, nice to see you pop up here! Hope to see more of you.

The Lamont Ranch is at about 2800 feet. We do indeed have our chill. Most of what I bought is low chill so we shall see! You all know that everything here is a microclimate and what will grow on my place may not grow on a neighbors only 1/4 mile away. It's all an experiment so it's all good!!!

We are at 320 foot elevation and reliably get peaches from our "Florida Prince" peach tree. It is a very low chill variety and if you Google "Dave Wilson fruit trees" you'll find his website which has a lot about chilling requirements. There is also Bay Laurel Nursery which has a website and you can mail order bare root fruit trees from them.

In general stone fruits do not do well in Hawai'i, but the Japanese plums from the Volcano area used to be world famous! Unfortunately the plum business was ruined by a few bad years due to vog.

I will keep it in mind but I like to try everything! Worst that can happen is that I have some pretty trees. Best will be an ample supply of fruit. Smile

Well, if the trees don't bear fruit, then use them as rootstock and graft some of the varieties which do set fruit onto them. Where did you get the bare root trees from? Did they mention the amount of chilling hours required? Which varieties did you get?

These were all low chill hour plants brought in by Paradise Plants. I have confidence in them. I also have about 8 more coming from a nursery in Honolulu (2 ea of: two varieties of plum and 2 ea of three varities of apple) again, developed for Hawaii. We shall see!!!

If you want honest info on the trees, come on over and take a look. I will never remember to go check all the tags and copy down the names! I just know two each of apricots, plumcots, pears and peaches. All low chill. We shall see!

Edited for vendor name..
