I am into fireplaces. For me, that means open fireplaces without doors, otherwise it is just a form of wood stove. Some of you may have read my posts on fireplaces where I describe the Rumford fireplace. Open fireplaces provide heat through radiation and the design of the Rumford fireplace maximizes this output.

Where is the connection to fireplaces (or Hawaii for that matter)? Well I recall reading about a case where a space shuttle engineer who was building a fireplace took home a bunch of broken/defective tiles to line the inside of the fireplace with. He almost got in trouble until a formal review concluded that well it was OK cause they were broke.

You want the inside of the fireplace to be shiny to heat the way a flashlight reflector is shiny to light.

The connection to Hawaii? Dunno.
