Target to open July 24th
#1
www.staradvertiser.com from today's business briefs

Hilo will become Target's fourth Hawaii location, but it will be the first to offer fresh produce and meat. The store will have about 10.000 square feet of cooler and freezer space. With the addition of an expanded fresh food assortment, the company said Hilo customers will be able to purchase about 75% of their grocery lists at Target[Big Grin]

Not sure how this will impact the new Safeway if they are going to offer same food items?

Walmart must be kicking themselves, they did not build the Sam's club or superstore on that property since they had the first option!!!

What is really sad is that we have to read a Oahu newspaper to get faster news about Hilo.

Target had newspaper ads in late December looking for employees for the soon-to-be new store in Hilo.

Good news for east Hawaii residents! Our first superstore! And direct competition with Safeway, KTA, Foodland and even Costco. And usually increased competition means lower prices!

If Target does the same in Hilo as they started doing here in Baton Rouge, they will match competitors' ad prices, like WalMart. Sometimes they make you go to the service desk though.

Mauka - not sure what point you were trying to make, but from your link:

"Target Corporation is ranked consistently in the top philanthropic companies in the United States. Target donates about five percent of its pre-tax operating profit to charity organizations across the nation. It is also a policy of the Corporation to give back to the communities where they are located.

One of their programs is aimed at helping the schools in the areas their stores are situated. They give a percentage of charges made on their Target VISA card to schools that the buyer designates. So far, they have given more than $150 million dollars to schools. In total, Target Corporation gives about $3 million dollars a week to the communities in which they operate."

The jobs that have been created with building the stores. Plus the hiring of employees for Target, Walgreens and also a good possibility Safeway will be adding to their staff, will give a much needed boost to this community. The stores we have now due to the population increase, cannot keep items in stock.[Sad]

Wikipedia.org very interesting, detailed article on Target
