The Safeway grand opening is this evening across from Home Depot. They are giving away $10 off coupons like confetti. $10 off any $50 purchase (tonight only).
Probably gonna be busy.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Just got back and I can say it is wonderful to have a store this nice on this side of the island! I went in about 4:00 and wandered around drinking their wine, eating all the food, and listening to the live music. The store is the biggest Safeway I've been in and even bigger than Kona side according to one employee. The selection is marvelous AND they have a olive bar!! I was in seventh heaven! Or was it just all the wine and beer they were pushing!! LOL

Love the new store -- if a grocery store can be sexy, it's got it.
Wish I'd seen the live music and partying, but there was such a traffic jam at 6 that I laid low at Starbucks until 7. Didn't help, store was mad packed with people.
By about 8:30 it cleared out enough to where I could move around. The samples back at the meat department were yummy. Hilo Coffee Mill folks were there, a new presence on the shelf. Prices too high test for me but nice to see it. There were lots of new brands. There's a real wine and liquor section instead of half an aisle.
Even a section just for regional winds from other countries.
Olive bar was a big hit. Sadly, not an open bar.
Biggest surprise was the in store branch of BOH. Very cool as a place other than KTA to do Saturday banking. Pharmacy is open until 8 now too.
I doubt I've ever seen so many people in one store in Hilo. It left Walmart first of the month in the dust. Look forward to when it gets normal.
The coupon was 10% off excluding liquor and milk and some other things.

The new Safeway is great, way to crowded to explore the different sections! Prices expensive but worth it, found in the international section, Branston Pickle, HP Sauce, Heinz Salad Cream, PG Tips, Blackcurrant Jam and Robertson Orange Barley Water, brings back memories.[

Deli is fantastic, the plan is to keep the hot food section open late and the deli open until midnight. Store closing at 1:00 am.
Stop by early this morning, before 6:00am, deli was stocked, poke station by entrance, and people in line buying Chinese food. WOW

Made it to the Party. Very nice.
Open till 1 AM every day. Sushi station, Floral department, Tables inside and outside, BOH open on Sundays, Plenty registers+ self checkout. The produce department reminded me somewhat of the way Whole Foods does it.

The olive bar was "open" before 6:00! Could ask for samples of any of the items displayed! I have a nice wine glass with the Safeway logo for a souvenir! There was one wine vendor that was giving samples of one wine that was 26 bucks a bottle. Some people didn't venture to far from the wine vendors!!

And if you think the new Safeway is nice...wait until the new Target superstore opens in July. Between the two of them...One will never have to worry about finding parking space at Walmart ever again!...LOL
