Matson sets record fuel surcharge - 43.5%
#1
From the Star Advertiser: Matson to raise fuel surcharge to 43.5%, highest on record.

"Matson Navigation Co. said it will raise its fuel surcharge on shipments from the mainland to 43.5 percent one May 1, the highest level since it started imposing the charge more than 10 years ago.

The 8.5-percentage-point hike is the third in three months for Matson, which said it is trying to keep pace with rapidly rising oil prices."
Assume the best and ask questions.

5.9% for Fed Ex a year ago Jan 18 (2010) so probably one coming.

4.9% for UPS as of Jan 3, 2011

21.75% for Matson just since Jan 1, 2011.

Am I mistaken or don't UPS and Fed Ex use fuel too?

Matson has us by the ummmmmmm..... toes.

it will soon be cheaper to order a roll of TP from the mainland and have it UPS'd here than buy from a retailer using Matson.

It must be nice to have a monopoly where you can just raise prices and not worry much about competition. For the rest of us with a business it seems we have to cut prices and increase services.

Yep...It's all happening again. Gasoline is now $4.30 in downtown Hilo. Matson is raising their rates...Airlines are adding fuel surcharges again which is making vacationers from the mainland not fly anywhere....and Japan airlines just announced that they are drastically cutting their flights to Hawaii because hardly anyone from Japan is flying anywhere. This spells economic disaster for Hawaii....

Matson is not a monopoly. Any shipper can enter the Hawaii-Mainland market. Matson is the major provider, but they are not the only provider. To compare, Horizon's fuel surchage is 35% between the mainland and Hawaii and they may raise it again.

Kapohocat,

UPS rates just went up again the past few weeks too.

This is for "ground" shipping.

Still the best deal for bigger stuff, but 2-5 more for 5-6 pounds.

Oil was almost 40% higher 3 years ago so that should have been the highest fuel charge on record, by a lot. Gas prices also seem to be at or close to what they were then, despite oil being quite a bit lower than the peak of 2008. Once again they're all screwing people just because they can.

If you can't beat them, join them.

Tesoro stock (TSO) was at $10.00 in October, 2008. It closed @ $27.04 last Friday.
