What's the deal with the more than double price increase on my truck registration. $138.00 a year!!!! Give me a break. Makes me want to go rogue.
Has this happened to ya'll?
Dory,
What do you mean by "go rogue" ... Does this mean drive around illegally and without insurance to cover those whom you might run into and injure sans coverage because you do not want to pay an extra 69.00 ?
Please exlplain your intentions.

The Trib Herald last week had a report that the license rates for Dec. had errors on the form.
http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/archive/2011/11/24
There was an increase in the rates in October
ETA: 1cent /# increase to 10,000# They have not published this, but the rates went
from $0.0075 to $0.01.75 up to 4,000#
from $.0125 to $.0225 for up to 10,000#
flat rate of $300 for over 10,000#
You could check the DOF MVR Info page (...unfortunately the web link for the fee schedule does not seem to be up):
http://www.co.hawaii.hi.us/vrl/mvrgeninfo.html
ETA: Found out you are to call Lee Lord with your license &/or Reg.# for the corrected amount, at:
Vehicle Registration Phone Number 961-8351
DOF MVR online registration page (you pay an additional fee to use the online service!)

Update: Thank you Carey for the specific info. I called Lee Lord & was told the $138. is correct. It went up $20 + $.01 per lb. They gave me the Governor's number to complain. It's 974-6262 - they answered & I was told "the worst Governor in the US" signed the bill to cover the deficit in the road maintenance fund. The are taking names & numbers & sending all the complaints to the Governor's office. I was told some registrations are over $500 - $600. That's the way Government - hit the poor people once again. I strongly encourage everyone to call the Governor's office & complain. If enough call, it might actually do something. We have to fight back!

Ours went up 50% to $149 - still less than our bill was in Calif, so I'm ok with it. The error on truck and motorcycle bills was the other way around - they were lower than they were supposed to be.

You can have car insurance without paying the government to register it. However, if you have an accident and your insurance carrier determines that you have been operating your vehicle illegally - because it isn't registered - they could deny your claim. Any time you operate your vehicle in an illegal manner coverage is generally excluded. If a cop shows up at the scene of an accident involving you as a driver and you are cited for an unregistered vehicle; with many companies you've wasted money paying for insurance which is not going to do diddly for you. If you've made the effort to insure your car, why would you not register it?

Mine is $99.99, it didn't go up enough. I have a black 300 and live in a subdivision where the road goes from awesome to pretty much crap by the time I get to my driveway. The subdivision does a pretty good job of paving with the little $ they get each year. It sure 'nuff is expensive!
I'd be willing to pay $437 a year; the necessary amount (relative to everyone else paying a relative amount) to keep the county roads in great shape on this island and to pay for the county to pave this subdivision and all the others from the great land debacles.
I can do without great beaches on this side, without a Costco, or beautiful hotels with their wonderful landscapes, with all the damn rain and the pit bulls and roosters; but please, for goodness sake, give me a good road!

Yes, thats exactly what they told me the beginning of this month when I registered one of our cars. I was a day late, and thought it was a huge late fee but no....
