Window styles?
#1
I am sick to death of all the critters & the humidity that comes thru our jalousie windows. Any suggestions as to replacement window styles? We are partial to older home style architecture. .

You can replace with dual glaze double hung windows and than trim it out for the style or ambiance you are trying to achieve. Just one idea.

I did a little more research and it looks like the style that will give us the most airflow would be awning windows... SO, anyone have any recommendations for where to get them? I think the double hung don't give enough airflow. We like how jealousies allow you to have your entire window opening open.

We have awnings, 3 different manufacturers (we have been at this remodel a LOOONNNGGG time)

Definitely get stainless hardware & scissors...we have vinyl, if you can spring for fiberglass, I would recommend it, but for the smaller windows we have the vinyl is OK

Stacking the awning windows works a lot like jalousie windows, & don't block walking around the house...(wish we had thought of it earlier, but stacked a pair in the kitchen, gives a nice air flows)

Carey, yes, that is what I'm thinking ... It looks sorta jalousie, but will seal completely so the critters can't come in. And I love that you can stack them. And like riverwolf says, we can trim out as we'd like.

thanks for the advice on fiberglass vs. vinyl. I have a feeling we'll have to go to specialty store bc of odd sizes.

Love to take full credit for the thought, but I had seen a print ad for Coastal Windows that had them stacked... have found out since most of the mfg. will set them up in a stacked custom... if you want, or you can do like we did with 2 that we got in the discount pile, and build frames for 2 (more space between, but it was a really good discount & so...)

To get an idea of what they look like in a custom stack, the picture in the ad I saw was similar to the photo in the right of the Coastal web site:

I would contact Terryl at Cadowin - http://www.cadowininc.com/

I was pretty set on awnings or casements for our LR on our (never ending) remodel. I spent a long time talking with Terryl on site and he talked me out of them because of our proximity to the ocean - and the unrelenting issues with the hardware (even stainless) on any moving part.

We ended up with single hungs and even though at the time, I was disappointed, but now I am honestly I listened.

Terryl told me straight up he would sell me the ones I wanted but that in the end, I would be very unhappy.

I like that although Terryl is not bottom of the line HD crap kind of pricing - you always pay for what you get - he guides us to better choices which is the long run, more than make up any difference. And if I have a question or a latch sticks - Terryl comes out and fixes it or tells me what I need to do at NC. Even years later.

ETA: This post reminded me to call Terryl this AM and he guided me on replacing at our rental a 12+ ft opening with 2 old 30" x 60" jalousie windows (circa early 1980's) and a old 6068 alum sliding glass door that always has screen issues and doesn't need to be there.... he suggested sliders instead if we could take door out, so we are doing two 6050 sliding glass windows for a lot less money. As much as I hate to say this - screen doors for SGD's, especially in a rental, just do not hold up. The window replacing the jalousie would have to be safety glass if next to the SGD too. Terryl reminded me of that, he knew off the top of his head the ventilation requirement and checked it on the 6050's.

As a comparison, I would have walked into HD - they would have just taken my order for exact size replacements, and I would be $$$'s poorer because of it.
