The part that I'd love to see looked into is just exactly what happened (or happens) to the food that was scheduled to be shipped here to Hawaii?
I'm going to go out on that preverbal limb here and I'd venture to say that if an in-depth investigation was done, we will find that the food was disposed, most likely in a landfill, and at a total cost greater than what just shipping it would have been.
But you got to draw the line somewhere. Right?
Scheduled shipments, not food already on the way.
The food, which was most likely canned goods or frozen items will simply be sold to another wholesaler.

Note the difference between my post and how I worded my assumption and stated my opinion versus your "confidently spoken" factual opinion.
From the link HOTPE posted:
“This included frozen chicken, pulled pork, eggs — really expensive, healthy food items that we were really excited to bring in and distribute. And six of those loads have already been turned back,” Miller said.
At any event, it sure must suck to be the ones who really needed that food, but hey, we saved all that money now, right?

Frozen items and "expensive" items won't be thrown into a landfill. They will be resold before any expiration date.
You must have really high blood pressure. Maybe MyManoa can chime in and really get you going?

Can you prove that? Some of the reported news articles state these shipments were "turned around" implying they were loaded into containers and on a ship. Even if every scrap of food is saved and resold/reused, who pays for all of that now?
And yes, once again, referencing my blood pressure.
Typical response.
I expect nothing more than that from you.
And your last sentence says more about you than I could ever offer in rebuttal.
I am quite sure you would pat that poster on the back and give him a few high fives if he ever said to your wife, girlfriend, fiancé, significant other, daughter, granddaughter or any other female relative or close associate of yours the same things he has said to me and about me and wished upon me.

Arguing about food might work up an appetite, but how exactly does it help feed people on a fixed, limited budget?

All part of those “paybacks” that are now beginning, right?
But I must agree with you – I am sure there are quite a few PunaWebbers who would agree with that one poster and the thoughts that occupy his head. Not surprising to me in the least!

Good question Moderator 2.
While it does nothing to specifically feed people in any need, be it on a fixed budget, or even those who would be considered “well off” finding themselves suddenly unemployed, but it does highlight the situation.
And when it comes to the taxpayer, at the end of it all, what is cheaper? Feeding the homeless and less fortunate, or letting them starve? I guess a starving population is a far more captive audience, but, such as it is today.
Also, let’s remember, these Food Bank food shipments are a method of mass inventory disposal of the food makers, since most, if not all, is food close to, at or already expired, but, in accordance with FDA rules, still acceptable to consume.
And in MOST cases, these Food Bank shipments are either donated or purchased at significant discount, so it becomes a race to get this food “restocked” and sold to the next buyer, because by the time all that happens, that food maybe already past its safe consumption time period.
Also, all this frozen food MUST be kept frozen. Have any idea of the costs involved in that? Who pays for that?
At any event, there are numerous Food Banks here on the Big Island that are happy to take donations of either food, cash or both.
Maybe some of those who want to argue about it, could belly up to the bar so to speak, and make a donation?
At least here in Hilo, we’ll have that new temporary morgue set up and running soon.
Is that where the taxpayer really wants to see his money go?

Do you understand that in this day and age we all have access to the internet which we can research and read the news and come to our own conclusions ??
We don't need you to blast out your bitch of the day and certainly don't need it for the next 4 years.
About the Post Office.
It's an antiquated oversized building that could be replaced by one that at least has parking.
After the earthquake in 2018 they moved all mail to the main Hilo post office until the building could be inspected for damage.
The main Hilo post office is at the airport and actually has a dedicated parking lot.

Thank you for that highly informative as well as sheer genius level of an intellectual response Obie! I am in awe! I thought PunaWeb was for having open discussions about current events facing Puna, Hilo, The Big Island and Hawaii, but clearly, I must be mistaken.
As for the old Hilo Post Office, in 1974 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Now, if we are serious about closing the Hilo Post Office, I'd say what need is there for any of the other buildings on The National Register of Historic Places.
Hell lets shit can them all. Just leave them to rot. We'll save billions. Who cares about the employees of those buildings, or what functions to human society those buildings bring, "shut 'em down!"
And the even better upside, think how much fun you'll have complaining about all the starving homeless bums that move in!
But yeah, the Hilo Airport Post Office has a parking lot! A far far more important consideration that anything else possible could be!
Too bad this idea of closing the old Hilo Post Office wasn't floated a few years ago. HPP could have bought the old Post Office, moved it, brick by brick, and rebuilt it on just one of those 20-acre sites. Could have been a win win for all!
And with a nice big parking lot too!
