Also, I hav a ton of starts in my greenhouse that I would b happy t share... roma tomatoes, cilantro, lettuce are really aundant right now. I had a fwe things just starting to come up.... bell peppers and something else I can't remember...... I share.. many of us do.

Definitely keep the tomatoes out of the rain. Kale and root crops do grow very well in upper puna. Stop by Fresh Farms in mountain view village (between the video store and bakery) for great farm products and information. One of our specialties is container gardening. Companion planting is a great idea and so is enhancing the quality of your native top soil.
