Elec Power thread for the derailer
#11
It would take quite a bit of research to identify each oil burning plant and find out if it is burning oil to heat a boiler or it was an actual diesel engine burning the oil. The gas turbines are upgrades going on, so it will be plants that aren't being phased out. The main point is these oil burning plants are combusting (incinerating) foreign imported oil, when we have plenty of indigenous power locally.

March Meeting: “Overview of the HELCO Gas Turbine Power Plant Project Upgrade for Hawaii Electric Light Co, Inc., Keahole Plant”

IPP - independent power producer. This goes hand in hand with PPA - power purchase agreement. HELCO is increasing more electric power by PPA with IPP, so HELCO is contracting out more rather than owning power plants outright. Some of the new solar farms are HELCO power plants though.

Methane gas from the dump would give a nice, hot flame for the primitive steam turbine, or use as fuel for an efficient engine to power the generator. The fuel is free, but the power companies would probably hire a consultant to foresee the feasibility, yada yada...

What if electricity was so plentiful - the utility would pay users to consume it - a reality in Australia
