DLNR closed Shipman paths
#11
I live near the parking area. In the last week a hiker had to be rescued from the trail and on Monday (Labor Day) a car was stolen out of the parking lot.

Parking lot closed by DLNR.
Paths closed by DLNR.
Yes, it is Shipman land.
The closed signs are marked DNLR.

I just went down to the Shipman Beach trailhead this morning (Wed).
The gate is locked as hawaiideborah said, and the DLNR has posted a closed trail sign.
You can still park outside the gate, and the trail that angles toward the Hilo side of Kaloli Point is accessible.

The four wheel drive path on the Hilo side of the point was blocked by trees until Wed or Thur last week. When I hiked in Friday morning (8/29) someone had chainsawed the trail open leading to the tip of Kaloli Point. I haven't tried the path to the left which leads to Pebble Beach, then connects with the trail to Shipman Beach, but as of last week (8/27) it was impassible with huge ironwoods down as far down the path as I could see.

Our offices are actually in Hilo, on university land.
