Hawaii ranked worst state to make a living
California gas prices are dominated by their local refineries

Required due to California's special blend of gasoline.

and much more tax

Taxes (both gas and the sales tax) are regional; local price of gas can fluctuate by a dollar (or more) depending exactly where in California the gas is purchased.

When oil first dropped in price, the gas prices in CA reflected that drop. It now seems the refiners have figured out how to manipulate the prices again, likely with regulatory help, to maximize their gouging of the CA consumers. In other words, what's new?

Because B100 burns better I got a 2mpg boost when I switched!

We are lucky to have Big Island Biodiesel at the top of Shipman Industrial Park. If you drive a diesel stop by and talk story - you`ll be glad you did!

Gas prices are not manipulated by refineries. History has shown that refinery profits stay relatively steady, year after year.

Thanks NG for actually checking the gas prices. I was interested in California but that was before the computer people made it unaffordable for people like me. Puna looks nothing like California but more like Florida where they got all those gator cable shows. And I agree that people seem to masochisticly prefer drier places like Oahu with the 5 hour commutes. It struck me there couldn't be so much housing demand for Hilo when you see all the empty houses around the Manono Street area.

Also regarding California gas prices I read there was an explosion at a refinery that caused dislocation earlier this year and another refinery down for maintenance presently somewhat later in the season. And the summer gas formulation is more costly isn't it?

Tesoro made the corporate decision to sell there Hawaii refinery in the last 2years. I think the new owner Par made the sweetheart deal with Safeway and seem to be benefiting from low oil prices like the airlines.

Nobody said refineries manipulate gas prices. However, what they are refining and various problems at refineries impact gas prices. Refineries are one of the most dangerous workplaces, talking about employment. They blow up fairly frequently and experience large failures. This headline also says you are wrong.

Didn't the State of CA investigate the "amazing coincidence" around the timing of these "problems" and "scheduled maintenance"?

My mainland friends ask me how I can possibly afford to live in Hawaii on nothing but social security. I tell them you can live like a king here on social security if you own your place. No heating, no cooling, water/electricity free from the sky. Just do not get sick. Of course if you get sick, you are hosed anywhere.
