We got a free "$249" signal enhancer from Verizon because we are in a low spot (?) on 22nd and Makuu. They had to verify weak signal strength first. It failed after about 2+ years and we had to talk hard to get a free replacement. We now have a wi-fi router which gives a stronger signal on the phone. I do not know which signal the phone actually uses.

We have used Page Plus. They ride on Verizon back bone. Service is good. Available phones not so great. Perfect for low use or emergency cellular usage,
