Mosquitoes Live to Bite Another Day
#11
Ironically, they probably are responsible for a decent amount, as birders flock here (some pun intended) to see our native birds before they go extinct. Presumably those birders are staying at hotels or B&Bs and getting food from restaurants and/or grocery stores.

With the rainy season approaching (like it has been dry out?) this is a timely article on a couple of methods being developed to control mosquitoes. Surprisingly, tech companies like Google and Microsoft are also involved.

The cost to protect a city using Intrexon's approach is estimated at only $8 to $10 per person, per year. This seems extremely affordable, to the point of a council member being able to use their discretionary funds to pay for a village to get the situation under control. Could you imagine all of Pahoa Village including the new park, controlled for under $100,000? What is the total cost of one child being born with microcephaly over a lifetime? How about the drop in tourism Pahoa would suffer from a Zika outbreak?
