SUBJECT - TSUNAMI INFORMATION STATEMENT

THIS STATEMENT IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY. NO ACTION REQUIRED.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

ORIGIN TIME - 0649 PM HST 07 SEP 2017
COORDINATES - 14.9 NORTH 94.0 WEST
LOCATION - OFF THE COAST OF CHIAPAS MEXICO
MAGNITUDE - 8.2 MOMENT

EVALUATION

THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER HAS ISSUED A TSUNAMI THREAT
MESSAGE FOR OTHER PARTS OF THE PACIFIC LOCATED CLOSER TO THE
EARTHQUAKE. HOWEVER... ANY TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII IS STILL
UNDER EVALUATION.

ADDITIONAL STATEMENTS FOR THIS EVENT WILL BE ISSUED WHEN
ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED.

No problem. When I see those civil defense messages about a small EQ in Hawaii and that there is no tsunami threat (and then repeats it!), I feel like tearing my hair out.

A 7.9-moment mag EQ is generally needed to create a threatening Pacific-wide tsunami and this was up there, but suspect its precise location and the type of EQ ended up with no threat here, but only until the DART buoys recorded potential waves. Can't say the same for the west coast of Mexico though...
