Shipman is closing KALOLI Point HPP
#11
With the high concentrations of arsenic and other toxens that Shipman deposited on their lands over the years, they're probably worried about the health and safety of their neighbors. Ya think?

I do think that what Shipman did was rather abrupt. Many fishermen have favorite spots in the coastal areas.....some they have been going to for years. I think it is really important to not close off access to the coast. I think part of preserving Hawaii successfully may thinking of ownership of important access points in a different way than we think of on the mainland.

We really don't want it to turn into Kauai where people have to walk on a three foot strip to get to places they have always gone.

But then, that might just be the passionfruit talking.

I rented ag land from Shipman for years. I found them to be a friend of agriculture, sensitive to the community and very good stewards of the land. Over the years they have given land for schools, parks, and community projects. I find it doubtful that they have any selfish motives in blocking Kaloli Point.

They've allowed for walk-in traffic so the fishers will have to walk, but no 4 x 4 or other vehicles...the article was pretty clear about the Shipman's reasons for "redirecting" people. They don't want to discourage people from fishing and enjoying the coast, but said there's more beer bottle glass down there than lava...that says a lot.
