Dangers associated with hiking in Hawai'i
#11
Thanks for the words of warning - I will not take this lightly!

Fortunately, it's near Leilani and there are some roads to get oriented by. I'll be there end of March so it shouldn't be AS rainy.

cwoods61, there IS NO dusk in Puna!

I'm amazed no one has mentioned beware of dogs and always carry a "Whack Stick" (something to whack the wild dogs with)

Remember this story of the Hiker that was attacked by dogs?

Of course i live on the Leeward side so I don't know if the vegetation ever seasonally die out in Puna. In which case need the histamine blocker for help to cutting through the sawgrass and the coffee to counteract the blocker- is benadryl a histamine blocker?

Damon: Yes I agree a whack stick & pepper spray always handy especially when hiking alone. Def. had two run ins w/ out of control dogs already. Almost pepper sprayed a Great Dane on the beach (it was smart enough to back off) and threw rocks at a small vicious dog (more annoying than dangerous, ha).
