U-Pick fruits ?
#11
wow! the poho berry jam sounds delish! I have recently had a fruit jam with red peppers and it had such a wonderful taste combo. I cannot remember what fruit it was though, definately not the poho berry because I have never even heard of them before.

You might want to check out the grocery store in Honomu. They sell all kinds of home-made jams, jellies, preserves, etc.

Since we are on the subject of fruit (how perfect for a bunch of nuts, don't 'ya think?Wink) I have lychee coming out of my ears! Does anybody have any recipes for that other than sticking as much as your freezer will hold in there for future use? The previous sentence is so wrong on so many fronts but you know what I mean - good thing I'm not grading myself! All ideas and recipes appreciated and Pam L. if you want me to bring you some this weekend just let me know. Aloha to all and may the sun kiss your cute little faces! Pam...er, pj

How can anyone have too much lychee? The thought boggles the mind!

Guavas are easy to make into jam. Gather a five gallon bucket of guavas, wash and put them in a large heavy bottomed pot, squish them a bit, then simmer until they are all soft. Run them through a ricer or a strainer of some sort to get the seeds out. Put them back in the pan and add enough suger until it tastes good. Simmer until it "sheets" off the back of a big metal spoon. While you've been doing all this, wash and put the jelly jars into cold water and bring to a boil. Once the jam is ready put it in the jars, leave about a half inch at the top and pour some melted parrafin wax (not surf wax) over the top. Oh, melt the wax in a double boiler so it doesn't catch on fire. Not that anyone I know has ever done that, but that's what my grannie always said.

You can do basically the same thing with most of the fruits. Surinam cherries need more sugar and go well with a bit of lemon and ginger. Any passion fruit you find can be tossed in the pot with just about any other of the soft fruits or if you get enough passion fruit it can be jam all by itself. I don't know if you can jellify pineapple, though, since I think it doesn't have any natural pectin in it. Bananas would probably be nasty if you tried to make them into jam, but I've never tried it.

I don't think we have any "u-pick" fruit places, mostly when folks get too much fruit they just share with their neighbors.

A hui hou!

One more site with recipes for lychee for the home cook, no need to buy other products with these recipes. Have only had dried lychee something like a dried date, but much better. Sure am looking forward to trying the fresh!

Mangosteen is definitely available on the Big Island. When I was there in October 2000 I bought some at a fruitstand on the Volcano Road(?) on the right a few miles up from Keaau. They are probably more available now.
