Lonely wanderer on Highways 19 and 130

We call him Mr. Aloha. He is a one man litter patrol. The county gives him those orange bags and he fills them and leaves them on the side of the road to be picked up. He also places many of those grocery bags on his handle bars and collects all kinds of recycle items in them. He even uses a whisk broom and a tooth brush to clean the sidewalks and bridges. I tried to interview him one day but he did not want any publicity.

Mr. Aloha rides his bike and maintains the highway from where he lives in Pepeekeo to just past the singing bridge in Hilo. He usually starts out in the mid afternoon and works diligently till sunset then rides home. I worry about him when I have not seen him for several days in a row. He is a bit physically unstable at times and there are a lot of big trucks on the highway.

Of a similar note...if any of you drive the north side of Hilo, there is an older gentleman who appears to have undertaken the responsibility of litter patrol. Usually see him in the afternoon with his bike with a "Drive with Aloha" sign. Bike is often overloaded with bags of trash. While we usually see him in or near the light at Wainuenue and Bayfront Hwy 19, I've been surprised to see him after dark pushing his bike toward Puakaa. Anyone know his story?

Going to town the other day I passed an older gentleman walking on the highway. I drove right by and it occured to me he had a cane and was old enough to be my GRANDFATHER, and that would be really old. So I made a u turn and came back around, found a spot to pull over to the side. Rolled down the window, and he came up and I asked if he would like a ride to where ever he was needing to go. He said thank you that would be swell. It was only about 2 1/2 miles to where he was headed.

On the drive to his home he tells me he walked to the casino earlier in the am as he didn't think he had enough gas in the car to drive. Well let me tell you that was a 5 mile am treek. He said he had fun at the casino, but was draggin trying to walk home! My word, walk a mile for a camel, walk 10 for the casino? Well my good deed, only the second time in my life I picked up some one on the road, and this one wasn't even hitch hiking! LOL!

I like this thread very much. When dropping a friend off in Opihikao the other day, there was an older lady hitching that beautiful road. I gave her a ride to Cash & Carry. Hitching is her normal mode of transportation. She said they have 8 cars but none work.

I don't normally pick 'em up when alone, but she had a good face and I was headed into town too.[]

How about "scooter Man"? I used to see him from Honaunau to Kaimu pushing and riding an old fashioned scooter. I was blown away to notice a few years ago that he upgraded to a moped.

On the subject of hitchhikers - some of them should make more of an effort to not look like Charles Manson, it may help in getting rides.

Greg, is "Scooter Man" a smallish fellow with blond dreadlocks? If so, the first time I saw him was in 1972 at an abandoned coffee plantation in Captain Cook where he was conducting horticulture in the limbs of a giant avocado tree.

That's the guy, Dave. Interesting character; I've seen him playing the nose flute at Left Point, Kalapana, many years ago. He's always on the move and was human powered for so long I was kind of taken aback when he became motorized.
