Shots fired in Leilani
#51
Two points;
1. Shooting a firearm in a residential area is illegal here. When I hear a gunshot in my neighborhood I call 911 because either someone is in a life threatening situation, or committing a crime. (I know what a gunshot(s) sounds like)

2. The humane society does do walk in euthanasia. They helped me put my old boy under in a gentle and loving way. Much better than a shot to the head.

...most subdivisions are not zoned "residential".

In fact, the zoning code has very little to say about the discharge of firearms.

"Residential" in this context, doesn't apply to zoning, but human habitation.

I live in a residential area that's zoned Ag; And you are correct that zoning has little to do with the discharge of firearms.

Language is confusing. I prefer the term "populated area".

Spaghetti lots are just too narrow for anything other than a shotgun.

"So yes, please keep your guns if you need them and use them appropriately, but overall I think Hawaii is better off keeping our local population away from such dangerous tools."

Steve, Do you really mean to say that it is okay for the typical reader of Punaweb to have a gun but not the "local" (by which I assume to mean a slightly darker skin tone) population because "they" are not responsible enough?
If I'm wrong could you please tell me what you meant so I can see how I misinterpret these kinds of things.

Hi Jackson
No it's not my intention. What I am referring to is our local (geographically speaking) population of hotheads who seem to be quick to violence and may regret their actions after the fact. People with quick tempers do not necessarily come from one cultural background but there seems to be a culture of violence here which gives me some pause. Just look at all the fight clubs and para-military training camps. People are proud to have Mixed Martial Arts training and oftentimes to perpetrate violence against other people. When I took a karate class way back in middle school it was to protect myself from other aggressive people, as well as all the other students in the class. Quite a few of the teenagers I know who are interested in MMA are training in order to be the aggressors. Just look at the guy who murdered someone with his hands last year or so down in Hilo. Somewhere I read that he mainly trained in MMA so he could hurt other people and unfortunately wound up killing another guy for no apparent reason.
Communication via keyboard can sometime be misconstrued because in conversations we can ask clarifying questions and read visual body language cues. Something like 50% of face to face conversation is nonverbal and perhaps I got a little sloppy with my typing because it was late in the evening for me. I appreciate your well considered response and thanks for asking me to clarify.
