It was my understanding that the testimony Faye took issue with concerned the rate at which sharks are bring killed in the ocean and was testifying in support of protections for sharks. The person testifying was from Oregon- a place that shares a Pacific coast with Hawaii.
Assume the best and ask questions.

I can't believe representative hanohanos actions, particularly after her previous slurs (which were also unbelievable). In this day and age you would think that such behavior would be absent from the political arena at the least if not all spectrums of our culture. I believe Senator Rudermans legislation on removing politicians from office is certainly in order with this type of unacceptable behavior not only occuring but repeatedly.
The testifiers age, ethnic background, place of birth, are of no consequence to anyone but a biggot. This is why none is of consequence in the legal / political system and also illustrates the issue around the arising controversy of which this topic is apart.
I'm amazed and ashamed to see posters on here bringing of issue the testifiers age, ethnic background, and/or place of birth.
Shame on you. You biggots. Auwe. Auwe

@ PauHana and Pahaoated. If the allegations are remotely close to what Mr. Jacobs has stated in his complaint, whether Rep. Hanohano is passionate on Hawaiian issues or not, is an embarrassment to all her constituents, period! Including me and hopefully you. If not, I suggest you re-think your statements above.
The testifiers age, race, background or whether a "new age puritan mainland transplant" or the reason "why we Kamaaina must cater to someone from Oregon" or Rep. Hanohano "local style", culture, "pidgin english", "talk story" style has absolutely no bearing on how Rep. Hanohano conducts herself at these public hearings. She apparently forgot that it is us/we that she represents and a reflection on "me" everyday she is in office and not her personal views that prioritize her attitude I am disgraced by Rep. Hanohano and will personally offer my sincere apologies to Mr. Jacobs and join him in his effort to remove her from office.
I don't care if your Hawaiian, "local", "born and raised" or from "Bum F*@k Egypt", you don't handle yourself like that as a Public Official. I will not be voting for Rep. Hanohano if these allegations prove true, I suggest you consider the same!
To be proud a "Hawaiian" member of our community, is to not have to mention it at all!

I thought this guy was a student at HPU, in Honolulu, and has been a resident of Hawaii the last four years? Perhaps a part-time resident, but one non-the-less. Either way, our state rules enable him to speak to the panel and he should be given the same courtesies and respect that everyone else receives in the same situation. It was inappropriate. I'm not sure who I am voting for at this point, but at least Ms. Hanohano knows that her behavior is an issue once again.

Why is it that so many of our elected officials seem to think the the purpose of public testimony is to merely take a poll of their constituents' beliefs, applauding those that align with the officials preconceived ideas and dismissing any ideas that differ from their own. It seems to me that the purpose of public testimony is to hear as many viewpoints and perspectives as possible so that the official can weigh them and then make a policy decision based on the best information available. So yes, a 22 year old student (resident or not...) may have knowledge or information that Rep. "Pffft" Hanohano needs to hear, and he should have been treated with more respect.

This poor guy did show his age even by answering her question about age. I would never give in to a question like that. It's a loaded question, loaded with prejudice. He wasn't really prepared to deal with a character like her. She is taking this high horse as if she is there for the native hawaiian people but her answers reveal ignorance and Jacobs could have used that to leverage his point. He could have kindly reminded her that in hawaiian mythology the shark is a god (Kamohoali'i) and should be protected just like the sea turtle. From a scientific stand point if sharks suffer the ecosystem suffers and the human population will suffer in return because we are a part of that ecosystem. Another scientific point is that sharks and rays urinate through their skin and thus can taste very much like ammonia. I know because I had this issue while trying to cook ray and had to research it but the ammonia taste is more evident in shark. With that said nobody is going to jump for shark meat when the taro runs out. They might hit up the sweet potato patch or some ahi first. Lastly, as a government employee, she works for us and yes we tell them what to do. People don't say this enough to politicians. They need to be reminded that what they think is important is just as important as any other individuals thoughts, no more, no less. At any other job they would be fired for thinking they are running things. "We the people" run this joint and they need to check themselves. This was meant to be a democracy. If they think they know better than the citizens of this nation they need to get another job. Become cult leader or something like that.
