One more observatory in addition to TMT?
#61
If the money invested in the TMT project is private or public might matter in the types of permits or environmental impact studies needed to move the project forward legally. especially on such environmentally sensitive lands held in trusts, protected, or taken? Then again projects like the super ferry or TMT don't initially need to have these in order first to break ground or start docking as we have learned in the past?.

The other 13 observatories on maunakea are not working with the military but they have or are not doing as stated on prior signed contracts. Also They are not protecting or respecting those before or after their endeavor atop maunakea as they prepare to expand. Concerned here that They have caused significant impacts to maunakea and its environment that may be irreversible.

Maunakea's aquifer could be at risk with the further development of the much larger telescope yet to be built. Mercury, dangerous chemicals, and human wastes have already been spilled atop maunakea at these much smaller observatories, one observatory atop maunakea has had three reported and confirmed mercury spills to date.
Anyone here ever been deep in the woods on the lower slopes of maunakea and actually seen the fresh water from maunakea's aquifer bubble or come up through the grounds? Heard of this phenomenon not sure if its true though.

Where exactly do you think the Hawaiians were pooping and peeing when they were working on the mountain for 800 years? Is this fantasy pre-contact Hawaii where things were so perfect, they didn't have to pee or poop?
Not going to give away ali'i secrets for the leeching lurkers but the pre-contact Hawaiians used to carve troughs, for thousands of feet, down the side of Mauna Kea, and it was for play, respectful but totally insane extreme sport playing, only for the ali'i, of course. Makes surfing, which they also invented, look tame in comparison.

"PunaMauka2,

That is rather vague, waving arms in the air stuff. On the same basis one could say agriculture is militarist.
"

i most emphatically agree. in fact, i would characterize that essay as disturbingly beyond waving arms in the air stuff.

my own comments were largely tongue-in-cheek, cringe to imagine someone might think i even remotely endorse the spirit and logic of that essay.

Opihikao,

"Apologies, HOTPE & Mr. Tom for even mentioning the bloody rumors. Signing out via telepathy (waltzing out of the thread ...)"

Apologies accepted, but I hope you understand why I'm so annoyed when someone tries to connect what I do to being related to the military. It couldn't be further from the truth. I'm just trying to help people figure out what this universe is all about.
