My Papa traveled the world and was very well read. Spoke four (4) languages, listened to everyone's opinion, and studied world affairs and different cultures during his lifetime. He probably would have given you an audience, as I have, in trying to understand all aspects of life and other people's beliefs and customs.
In short, it takes all kinds to make this world go around. Everything in moderation, he would say. When we take the horse blinders off, and look past our own nose, the world becomes a very interesting place. Even though we don't always agree, there should be some decency towards others and their opinions.
In trying not to take umbrage at your slightly insulting post (due to my quoting Edgar Cayce), I'm just going to go read some Nostradamus instead.
Oh, and "I hope some day you'll join us and the world will live as one". [ ] We should all hope so, without being judgemental of each other in the process.

Well just like the storms and the roads and the corruption and the racial tensions and the lava I think that the healthcare (or lack thereof) is what is keeping this place from becoming West Los Angeles.

The NHSC does offer a 3 year program to pay their student loans, but they need to be willing to spend another 3 years working in a place where most doctors do not want to live.
Actually, if you look at the data you linked, the "average" for "West", which includes Hawai'i, is $248,000.00 as shown on slide 5. Slide 2, which you link directly, shows doctors by specialty, with family practice being $176,000.00. Not a bad salary by any means. My wife's cousin had his student loans, practice, house and cottage payed off within 10 years of starting his practice. I'd say they are well compensated, but hard to say from the outside. On slide 9 half of physicians feel they are propertly compensated - find me another profession that feels that way. Slide 16, 46% of physicians spend less than 40 hours with patients a week (paperwork is covered on slide 21).

I agree, doctors are well compensated, and from talking to doctors I know they also seem quite satisfied with their profession.
My comment about their salary was mainly to point out that it's not as much as people think it is, as well as to note they have additional expenses and time in med school which aren't required by most other professions. Their yearly income is not strictly take home pay. Putting their earnings in context with the factors above, their income is still a lot, but most likely not what most of us would think of as A LOT. But as with most things, it's all relative.

Mahalo, PaulW. I understand sometimes people can get our "goat", no question. Papa always taught me that an open mind can accept what resonates within your own parameters, as it were. Is there a group that does fundraising for Hilo Med Center?
seems like they already need help; I spent two hours in the ER waiting room yesterday, and never did see a doctor (my symptoms subsided and I went home). Imagine what it will be like with even less staff.
