Hijack here,
What about those under utilized windmills. Couldn't they be used to power an onsite hydrogen generation plant. The gas could then be trucked anywhere on the island it was needed. I believe regular gasoline engines can be converted to hydrogen.

I don't pretend to know much about this, but I have heard that the problem with hydrogen is storing a useful amount. It might take more energy to compress the gas and truck it than you gain.

Also, wouldn't internal combustion still produce oxides of nitrogen or other pollutants? At least not using more fossil carbon.
