No argument from me on this ericlp - I too appreciate Rob's moderating and his gentle hand on the reins. For solutions, a very simple one: don't feed the trolls. They post looking for a response ("let's you and him fight"), if everyone simply refuses to rise to their bait, they will eventually go somewhere else to get the response that they are looking for.

If users can't refrain from feeding them, maybe Rob could let us award "troll points" to the abusers, with those receiving more than a set number of troll points, get to take a month vacation (and I'm only half serious here...).

Ideally, the points would eventually expire, with a filter for "don't show posts with a trollscore higher than X", so that people can pick a signal:noise ratio that works for them.

This would probably require different forum software, after which everyone would need 15Mbit DSL to choke down the rich media experience that's always included nowadays.

First off, thank you Rob for providing this forum. It's more than enough to offer us this meeting place, without asking for anything in addition to what is already here.

There is a lot to be learned from unpleasant people, events, and situations. It has been said that the Chinese symbol for "crisis" is composed of the characters for "danger" & "opportunity."*

Albert Einstein once said "In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity."

Unpleasant, difficult situations can teach us a great deal about an issue, the person posting, or our own response. In my business I have learned more in one day about alternative suppliers, methods of shipping, and contact people capable of solving my problem, than from years of uneventful work weeks. After a time I compiled almost 1/2 a page of Hawaiian Air phone numbers in Honolulu, Maui, Big Island (the unlisted ones), and Los Angeles, and when a situation arose I knew who to call within seconds. I once gave the list to an associate and her response was probably similar to when Blechtley Park cracked the code for the Enigma Machine.

Trolls. Can't live with them, could certainly live without them. I would only point out that most trolls come and then they go. They seem unbearable when they pop up in our discussions, because they comment incessantly everywhere on everything. But no matter what method of Troll Control is used, they always fade and disappear after awhile. It's good to keep that in mind when they start to get under your skin.

Thanks again for Punaweb Rob.
