Ships in Hilo Harbor
#11
OT, but before the Oahu group took over the Hilo newspaper, their motto was "Yesterdays news tomorrow." Now it's "yesterday's news the day after tomorrow."

Judging from Pahoated's link, they sure did a lot when they were there... that no one knew about!

I heard about the scheduled visit of the 3 Japanese Navy ships to Hilo over the weekend on the radio last week. Sherry Bracken was announcing it on the "Community Corner" event list. As I recall, they announced that the Japanese Navy band were to give a free performance at the Afook-Chinen on Sunday and a Japanese Navy officer was to give a talk at the Japanese Cultural Center in Hilo about the role of the Japanese Self Defense Forces in recovery efforts after the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 2011. I didn't check the newspaper but the visit was hardly covert.

Japanese training ships regularly visit Hawaii. One of them met an unfortunate end when a US SUB crashed into it in a freak accident off of Oahu. The Hilo visits happen quite regularly, as they come to Hilo at least once per year.....usually during Merrie Monarch. In the past, there used to be the International Festival parade. We'd look forward to seeing the Japanese Sailors in the parade. They were the ones who would carry the shrine. It was a pretty cool deal. I think that ended in the 80's or early 90's.
