Pahoa pool?

HOTPD
Much the same as when I was a young lifeguard (with far better pay & hours than I had as a young lifeguard, When I started out, as a 17yr old, we were at "training wage#699; -below minimum for the first 3 mos. then minimum wage & split shifts - through my early college years!)
Must have current Red Cross lifeguard certification
Must be able to complete 8 short course laps (400 meters) in 9 mins front crawl

Dream applicant would also have Red Cross Swim Instructor Certification
for $15.85/hr, for pretty much a 8:30-5pm job.... with county benefits.... not too bad a deal (not to make light, as I do realize all of what lifeguards put up with & the responsibility they have.... but this is a job that has been continuously posted since we moved...& there has almost always been a shortage of lifeguards in summer (esp with swim instruction experience) & the shortage usually extends into fall...
County listing, if you know of interested certified guards anywhere on island:

must have Red Cross lifeguard certification

I don't think there is training for this on the Big Island which is probably the biggest problem.

Eric, There is training for this on island...I have kept current by taking it!
UHH offers it, the county has offered it in their pool programs & Island CPR offers it... the harder one to keep current is the swim instructor... mine lapsed because that is much harder to get here...

Aloha Carey. Do you know if the County Lifeguards here are affected by the new law they were talking about which would end insurance coverage for Lifeguards? It seems wrong to me that Lifeguards often risk their own lives to save people and then can be sued.
There is a Good Samaritan Law to protect non professionals who offer to help.

I believe the lifeguards have the same liability protection as EMTs, Police and fire fighters. As I understand it, they are not being stripped of liability protection at all. What they may lose is absolute protection from liability suits. Drunk, asleep, high on meth will not be causes of negligence. I would like to hear from lifeguard on this topic. From the AP:

House Judiciary chairman Scott Nishimoto argues that under current law, lifeguards have additional protections that other first responders such as police, firefighters and emergency medical technicians do not have. His bill would treat all first responders equally, he said.

"The current law leaves members of the public, who are injured or die because a lifeguard may have performed his or her job in an unreasonable manner, without any way to seek justice. If your loved one is hurt or dies due to negligence, would you not want the right to seek resolution?" Nishimoto wrote in a statement. "Under the current law, you have no recourse."

So what is the problem with fairness?
