Im cheap and old school - grin.
A good snap trap - placement and baiting the key - works for me
my other place has many field rats that like to invade the walls - its like fishing - one needs to think like a rat - a real drag when they appear to be smarter.....
tried the rat zappers - battery packs and the whole nine yards - what I found was the plastic attracted gunk - after 3 months they were filthy .... like I said Im cheap ....hate to toss a $30.00 trap
baiting sucks 'cause it moves right into the food chain. I like the Io that likes to hang out in my tree over the fish pond....the fish may have another opinion -
Centipedes like to live in the coconut trees, I still have bad memories of centipedes running down my arms as I am trying to climb in the top of a 40 foot coconut tree. I was lucky my first instincts were to keep climbing, and not to just let go or flick the pedes off. After getting into the tree I did take the time to knock about 3 centipedes off my chest and shoulders. I remember sitting in that tree thankful that I had not been bit or that I did not panic and let go. After I had cleaned the tree of coconuts and climbed down, I could not stop iching everywhere. Came to find out I had these tiny little fire ants all over me, head to toe I was burning from these ants I could not see at first. Now I climb fewer trees, and pick and choose more carefully before I climb. I believe centipedes can sense fear, some folks may manifest themselves getting bit?. When I kill the big ones by the house I chop them up and spread them around my house to warn others of their fate. P.S. The 4-6 inch centipedes are the worst, Once they get 8 inches or larger they don't seem as interested in biting and don't leave as much pain behind their bites. I have been bitten at least a dozen times, cost of growing up here I guess?. I prefer the kona scorpions over the Centipedes. Anyone ever been tagged by those spiny nettle caterpillars? That stings and itches for days.

I've only seen one big centipede while living in Puna and it was in the house! It must have crawled under the door because it was covered in dust. He was quickly a gonner. I've seen several itty bitty ones while digging in the dirt, but they are so tiny I barely notice them. I think my chickens do a job keeping them down.
I've been bitten once when I lived on Oahu. I went to take the dogs out just before bed. I didn't even see it. I felt it run accross my foot before I felt the bite. Yeah, I freaked out. Nothing like feeling a centipede crawl aross your foot. The pain wasn't as bad as I heard it could be, but because this was right before bed I couldn't sleep because my foot was just throbbing. The only pain medicaton I had was nighttime cold medicine. Well, if you ever get bit, let me tell you, nighttime cold medicine works great! [
] It will take the pain away and knock you out! [
] The pain was gone by morning, but my foot was itchy for about week.

I can't imagine an eight-inch centipede. Eeek! The small one was bad enough. I like the idea of carrying forks everywhere. Guess I need a toolbelt - forks, tongs, hatchet...

For a cheap rat trap, try a 5 gallon bucket half filled with water, topped off with a covering of microwave popcorn. The rats climb in but they can't climb out.
Centipedes are part of the landscape, and although I've had many close calls, I've not yet been bit by one. Reminds me of an after surf (sundown) talk story session at Waialea decades ago. We were standing around in a circle (hehe) and I felt something crawling up my foot/leg. A quick shake and off scurried a rather large centipede. They called me "lucky f-ka" after that, for a couple years at least. As it turned out, I was the least lucky of the bunch, as several went on to pro surfing sponsorships.
