we 5th and 6th kailua/lanikai. our family home is located a block from there and is a favorite of president barrak obama and his family to stay. just watch out for the portuguese-man-of-war when it's windy. we sure did take it for granted and vary rarely went to the beach. now that we're here, we look for the beach.
don't forget to snorkel at hanauma bay.

Another big vote for Lanikai! You should also definitely put Halona Beach Cove on your list. It's the From Here to Eternity Beach. Path down is steep but it's not as bad as it looks.

Thanks Francine, Wyatt and Wendy for all of the colorful and picturesque suggestions!
Funny when I lived and worked in San Francisco I took it for granted also, couldn't wait to go out of town on the weekends!
We will definitely check out the Lanikai Beach and as we have a friend who volunteers at Hanauma Bay we will spend time there also! I have actually been to Halona Beach Cove in 1984, just didn't know the history of it back then! LOL

we like to head to Pyramid Rock Beach on Kaneale Marine Corp Base. Its open to all just tell the guard at the gate where your heading. You have to cross tha airstrip to get to it.
Very nice, peaceful vacant beach. You get the water conditions of the north shore without the crowds.
Peace

ooh! i L-O-V-E san francisco. one of my favorite cities! haven't been there in ages.
you can stop by kalapawai market for goodies/snacks on your way to the kailua/lanikai beaches. kailua town has really changed in the last several years. it's not your sleepy town any more.

Francine that is some market! LOL We took a look at the menu, wow, better swim first then hit the market. Hey if it is good enough for the Prez and his family, I think we will have a grand time there!
Well we are running out of days for all the beaches, but thank you all.
These suggestions will come in handy for other trips for other people also. Mahalos for sharing them with us.

ya , kalapawai is very cool,, in the old days it was a quiet little store run by the Wongs, cold beer and candy, pretty much it,, but Don, the new owner , really did it right, providing needed and wanted stuff, without making it too much or out of character for the neighborhood
