Back in the days when you hung the drain hose from your clothes washer over the side of your double laundry trays (that's what we all called them back then - now they're sinks) my dad changed the system. He put our drain hose in a piece of pipe that went to the outside of the house to a hose bib. There was about 75 feet of hose screwed onto the bib and would reach all over our back and side yard.

Us five kids' job, or chore as we called it, was to move the end of the hose to a different part of the lawn or a different tree or plant each time mom had laundry day. The recently watered areas were always the greenest.

I asked dad about it and was informed that his method accomplished a couple of beneficial things: 1.) It put the alkyli washwater to use in soil that needed it. 2.) It kept the water out of the septic tank where it would have impeded the bacterial action the tank chambers used to break down the effluent.

Results: Our lawn and vegetation was always green and our septic tank never needed to be pumped out.

Whether it would work with modern detergents the same way - I have no idea. My mom used either "Rinso" or "Fels Naptha" soap flakess. I don't see them advertised much anymore.

That's my story from the olden days and I'm sticking to it.

okay, well it seems like plenty of people are interested in gardening in Puna. So is this where it all starts and ends, with just a casual conversation about a desire to have a gardening thread here?

Has anybody asked Rob Tucker to make an additional thread for gardening on Punaweb yet? I'm sure it's pretty easy to add one more thread to this Message Board..

Yes, I would be intereste as well. Will be spending more time here shortly. I could use some help on basic landscaping too.
Hope that it gets off the ground.

Hey Puna gardeners, 4 pgs and in some cases 250+ posts per gardener, and still no gardening thread for Punaweb. Personally, I'd rather spend my time gardening. Who is this King Bob of Puna? We've got some kings (and some queens) out here in Ka'u too . . . . . . .
